Our operations
SKB currently operates two unique nuclear facilities with strong focus on safety. In addition, SKB’s ship, m/s Sigrid, transports the waste from the nuclear power plants to our facilities in Oskarshamn and Forsmark.
Our operations
Our operations
SKB operates two nuclear facilities: the Interim Storage Facility for Spent Nuclear Fuel, Clab, and the Final Repository for Short-Lived Radioactive Waste, SFR. In addition, there is a well-functioning transport system using the ship m/s Sigrid.
The operations and maintenance departments at the facilities employ around one hundred people and are responsible for the daily operation of the sites.
This includes the reception and handling of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel. It also involves maintaining the facilities through preventive maintenance, operational monitoring, transport planning, and ensuring that SKB complies with regulatory requirements.
Below, you can read more about SKB’s facilities, which have been in operation for many years. Currently, additional facilities are under construction to complete SKB’s system for managing radioactive waste. Learn more about these on the pages dedicated to our construction projects.

SKB's system
A safe final repository system
The system for dealing with Swedish radioactive waste comprises a number of facilities that together provide a safe chain. The first links in this chain were already in place in the early 1980s, some are being built right now, and others still have to be constructed. The radioactivity level of the waste determines how it is managed.

The Interim Storage Clab
Clab – Central Interim Storage Facility for Spent Nuclear Fuel
Clab is located at Simpevarp about 25 kilometres north of Oskarshamn. This is where all the spent nuclear fuel from Swedish nuclear power plants is kept while waiting for the final repository to begin operating.

The final repository SFR
This is where Sweden keeps its radioactive operational waste
SKB’s final repository SFR is located at Forsmark in the municipality of Östhammar. The facility started operating in 1988 and was then the first of its kind in the world.

Transport by sea
Safe transports by sea
The Swedish nuclear power plants are located on the coast and have their own ports. SKB’s own ship, m/s Sigrid, transports their waste to our facilities at Oskarshamn and Forsmark.
